J. M. W. Turner to appear on new Bank of England 20 Pound polymer banknote

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney revealed JMW Turner, one of Britain's most celebrated painters, will be the latest to feature on the currency, replacing Scottish economist Adam Smith. The note, part of the new polymer series, is due to be released by 2020.

The design on the reverse of the new note will include Turner's self-portrait and one of his key works The Fighting Temeraire - a tribute to the ship HMS Temeraire which played an important role in Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

It will also include the artist's signature from his will, the document with which he bequeathed many of his paintings to the country.
